Islamabad: The federal government has presented the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) Amendment Bill 2025 in the National Assembly, granting a newly established authority the power to take punitive action against social media platforms in case of violations.
Under the new Section 1A of the bill, a Social Media Protection and Regulatory Authority will be established. This authority will have the power to revoke the registration of social media platforms and set standards for their operation.
According to the bill, the authority will also be authorized to direct relevant institutions to remove illegal content from social media platforms.
The proposed amendments aim to regulate social media platforms more effectively, ensuring compliance with legal and ethical standards.
